Are you grateful for your mistakes?

Have you wanted to try something new but you chose not to because a little voice in your head was saying: ‘I could mess up, look silly and end up feeling embarrassed.’

Mistakes can cause us to question our abilities, our self-worth and affect our confidence. Out of the fear of making a mistake, we may decide to only try things we know we are good at or choose to try, but not around people’s judging eyes.

We all make mistakes even when we try our very best not to. It’s bound to happen – sometimes when you least expect it.

The next time you make a mistake, instead of beating yourself up or drowning in the emotion of embarrassment, remember to:

  1. Accept that mistakes will happen. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from you will make mistakes.
  2. Acknowledge that mistakes can bring up some tough emotions like embarrassment, frustration and anger. (totally normal)

Also changing your mindset to seeing mistakes as an opportunity to learn and grow helps you:

  • Reflect on your mistake: What would you do differently the next time? Who could you ask to help you improve?
  • Redirect your thoughts: First forgive yourself. Then choose to focus on what you are grateful for from the mistake. At first you might think, ‘there is nothing to be grateful for.’ The simplest way to discover what you could be grateful for is to ask yourself, ‘What did I learn from the mistake?

Rather than throw in the towel, carry on working on your new skill or task with enthusiasm and joy knowing that you are not only growing as a person but also learning so much about your wonderful self!

Until next time,
